The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is holding its National Delegates Congress in Kumasi to elect executive officers and vote on constitutional amendments. Approximately 7,163 delegates are choosing between 47 candidates for nine positions. Key figures like Paul Afoko (running on a '3R' agenda) and John Boadu are vying for the Chairmanship. While the party has already confirmed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its 2028 flagbearer, this congress is the final step in aligning the party's machinery following its 2024 defeat. Security is tight, with 4,000 police personnel deployed.
The outcome will determine the strategy of the primary opposition during President Mahama's current term. A shift toward a 'new identity' as suggested by analysts is intended to win back urban and intellectual voters ahead of the 2028 cycle.
Paul Afoko previously served as National Chairman before his controversial suspension in 2015. His return to the ballot represents a reconciliation effort within the party's Danquah-Busia-Dombo factions.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has detained Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah after he voluntarily surrendered following a High Court warrant. The investigation centers on criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and tax offenses involving SIC Life Savings and Loans, including a GHc2.2 million (~$187,531 USD) payment. While EOCO denies reports of a GHc50 million (~$4.26 million USD) bail, legal teams are fighting what they call a political 'witch-hunt.'
This case tests the boundaries of parliamentary immunity and the operational independence of EOCO in high-profile financial crime investigations.
A joint security task force demolished unauthorized structures along the La Beach area, including the popular Polo Beach Club and facilities at La Pleasure Beach. SSNIT defended the action as necessary to protect national hospitality assets like the Labadi Beach Hotel. The move was met with resistance from MP Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, who alleged lack of notice and private entity interference.
The demolition highlights the tension between protecting state-owned tourism investments and supporting the informal local economy along Accra's coastline.
An international tribunal upheld the Ghana Revenue Authority's (GRA) $393 million (~GHc4.61 billion USD) tax assessment against Tullow Ghana regarding business interruption insurance. Separately, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) exceeded its September target, generating $1.87 billion (~GHc21.94 billion USD) in foreign exchange from artisanal and small-scale mining.
The Tullow ruling underscores a more aggressive tax enforcement environment for multinational extractives. However, the GoldBod performance provides a significant buffer for the Bank of Ghana's reserves.
At the current interbank rate of GHc11.73 per dollar, and bureau rates near GHc12.25, the cedi remains under pressure despite these gains. Watch for exchange rate movements as they directly impact remittance value for family support.
Morocco's Attijariwafa Bank is acquiring a majority 55.22% stake in Societe Generale Ghana as the French bank exits the market. SSNIT is also increasing its stake in the bank to 24.36%. Meanwhile, the Bank of Ghana has maintained the policy rate at 14% to combat fuel-driven inflationary pressures.
The entry of Moroccan capital signals a shift in the regional banking landscape, while the hold on policy rates indicates the central bank's cautious stance toward external economic shocks.
A massive fire in Avenor, Accra, ravaged warehouses and squatter settlements at 'Kofikrom,' leading to the demolition of unauthorized structures to create emergency access routes. In the Volta Region, President Mahama visited Hohoe, where over 5,336 residents remain displaced by the overflow of the Dayi River. Entrepreneur Ibrahim Mahama has pledged 5,000 bags of cement to aid rebuilding.
The AMA has committed to keeping 'Kofikrom' access routes clear of wooden kiosks to prevent future fire disasters. Residents are advised not to return to water-damaged buildings in Hohoe until structural checks are complete.
The Ghana Police Service and DVLA will launch TraffiTech-GH next month. The system uses high-tech cameras to automatically ticket speeders and traffic violators. Emergency vehicles are exempt during duty, but private owners must update records to avoid liability for vehicles they have sold.
If you own or manage vehicles in Ghana, ensure all ownership documentation is updated at the DVLA before November 1 to avoid being charged for violations committed by others.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz has resigned just four months into his tenure after two losses left Ghana at the bottom of its 2027 AFCON qualifying group. Queiroz reportedly cited interference in player selection and poor logistics. A five-member committee has been tasked with finding a successor by October 9.
Black Stars context: The national team is at a low point after failing to qualify for recent major tournaments. The GFA is under intense pressure from the Ministry of Sports to implement seven structural reforms to restore public confidence.
Ghanaian sensation Seth 'Freezy Macbones' Gyimah captured the WBO Africa Light Heavyweight title in Lagos, defeating Nigeria's Godday Appah by majority decision. Gyimah floored Appah in the first round and held on through a late surge to secure the belt on away soil.
Rapper M.anifest has questioned the industry's reliance on the 'Afro' prefix (e.g., Afrobeats, Afrofusion), arguing that creative innovation should not be confined to global marketing labels. This comes as experts predict a 20-year global dominance cycle for traditional Highlife if modern artists continue to blend the genre effectively.
The debate reflects a push for authentic Ghanaian artistic identity in a global market dominated by generic continental labels.
Today we covered the critical NPP leadership elections in Kumasi, the detention of the Manhyia South MP in a major anti-corruption probe, and the Black Stars' coaching crisis as the nation searches for a new identity on and off the pitch. Thank you for reading the Anansi News Daily Brief!
