The New Patriotic Party (NPP) convened over 7,000 delegates at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to restructure the party after its 2024 defeat. Key reforms include a landmark amendment making the elected presidential candidate the official leader of the party, a role that previously reverted to the National Chairman. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia urged unity, while former President John Kufuor called for visionary leadership to restore public confidence. The conference faced logistical hurdles, including a walkout by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) delegation due to delays and a billboard collapse that damaged four vehicles.
This conference officially transitions the NPP into the 'Bawumia era,' centralizing authority in the flagbearer to prevent leadership friction during the opposition years. It signals a shift toward a more disciplined organizational front ahead of the 2028 cycle.
The NPP is currently navigating its first term in opposition under the Fourth Republic since 2016. Internal divisions often surface after election losses; these amendments are designed to pre-empt power struggles between the party headquarters and the flagbearer's office.
An Accra High Court has granted Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah bail in the sum of GHc10 million (~$852,413 USD) after he pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The case involves an alleged loss of GHc9.85 million (~$839,627 USD) related to his former role at SIC Life Savings and Loans. His detention for two nights by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) drew sharp criticism from Speaker Alban Bagbin and NPP leadership, who accused the Mahama administration of political intimidation.
The case tests the legal boundaries of parliamentary immunity and the independence of investigative bodies. It has become a political flashpoint, with supporters viewing it as a 'witch-hunt' while the state maintains it is a standard anti-corruption investigation.
President John Mahama has issued a directive to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to broadcast statutory meetings in local languages on FM stations. Minister Mahama Ayariga also gave MMDCEs a 30-day deadline to secure land for waste transfer stations as part of a national sanitation push. In Adentan, MP Mohammed Adamu Ramadan confirmed that 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) will now be directed toward local infrastructure, particularly roads.
By mandating local language broadcasts, the administration is attempting to bridge the gap between technical governance and the grassroots, potentially increasing local accountability for infrastructure spending.
The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) reported a massive performance for September 2026, generating $1.871 billion in foreign exchange from the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector. This exceeded the monthly target of $1.4 billion by over $470 million. The revenue surge is a vital support for national reserves and Cedi stability.
The ASM sector is becoming the primary engine for Ghana's forex liquidity. This surplus reduces the immediate pressure on the Bank of Ghana to intervene in the currency markets.
The over-performance suggests that recent formalization efforts in the small-scale sector are yielding higher traceable volumes. This increases the attractiveness of Ghana's precious metals sector for licensed buyers and refiners.
MTN Ghana has acquired spectrum licenses in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands from the National Communications Authority (NCA) for US$202 million. This move paves the way for the official rollout of 5G services in Ghana, which aims to enhance network capacity for both mobile and home connectivity.
Enhanced 5G connectivity will make digital communication and remote business management in Ghana significantly more reliable. Watch for the official launch date to upgrade family data plans.
A group of importers has petitioned the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to investigate the unauthorized removal of 28 containers from the Tema Port. Some containers were found empty in local warehouses, while others are still missing. Several arrests have already been made by the Tema Regional Police.
This incident highlights significant persistent security lapses in the maritime supply chain. Investors in logistics should account for high oversight costs at primary entry points.
The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) justified the October 2 demolition of unauthorized structures, including the Polo Beach Club, at the Labadi and La Palm beachfronts. SSNIT maintains that the unlawful occupation posed security risks to hotel guests and the reputation of Ghana's premier hospitality assets. The demolition has sparked a row with former NPP Chairman Freddie Blay, whose son owned the Polo Beach Club.
The Labadi beachfront has seen decades of land disputes between the La Stool (traditional authorities), private developers, and the state. The demolition took place while some properties were still allegedly under litigation.
NPP flagbearer Dr. Bawumia has already visited the site and pledged a formal 'redesign' and proper leases for operators if elected in 2028.
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has implemented new security protocols at Kotoka International Airport. All departing passengers must now undergo luggage checks via advanced scanners and sniffer dogs before entering the Departure Hall. Access to the hall is now strictly limited to travelers; families and well-wishers are no longer permitted past pre-screening.
You are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours before your flight. The new 'passengers only' rule in the Departure Hall significantly changes the traditional 'send-off' experience at KIA.
A road contractor working on the Accra-Winneba route caused a double fibre cut, leaving 72,754 Telecel Ghana subscribers in the Central Region without stable connectivity. Minister Samuel George confirmed that 181 Radio Access Network (RAN) sites were affected in Winneba and Agona Swedru.
The government is proposing stricter coordination protocols between construction firms and utility providers to prevent accidental damage to digital infrastructure.
The GFA has formed a five-member Technical Search Committee to find a successor to Carlos Queiroz following a disastrous AFCON qualifying run. Minister Kofi Adams has ruled out the dissolution of the GFA but demanded immediate results to salvage the campaign.
Black Stars context: Ghana currently sits at the bottom of its group with zero points after losses to The Gambia and Cote d'Ivoire. The search is a high-pressure attempt to prevent a total qualifying failure.
Accra Hearts of Oak face winless Dreams FC this Saturday in a crucial Ghana Premier League match. Following a loss to Karela United, the Phobians are under pressure to fix defensive lapses to stay in the title race.
Dancehall star Shatta Wale announced that his homecoming concert in the Volta Region—his first in a decade—will be free for fans. Entry is contingent on attendees having the MTN MoMo app, part of a corporate partnership to promote digital inclusion.
This reflects a shifting model in the Ghanaian music industry where corporate sponsorships offset ticket costs to ensure massive turnouts for top-tier artists.
