Team Ghana has intensified its pursuit of glory at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, buoyed by standout performances in both para-sports and track events. The nation officially entered the medal table following a stellar performance by Zinabu Issah in the Women’s Para Shot Put T57. Issah’s silver-medal throw of 8.65 meters has placed Ghana joint 20th on the overall standings alongside Sri Lanka, providing a significant boost to the contingent’s morale after a successful opening week of competition.
In the athletics arena, Joseph Paul Amoah has emerged as a primary medal contender after qualifying for the Men’s 200m final. Amoah delivered a composed and powerful performance in the semi-finals, clocking a season-best time of 20.24 seconds to secure an automatic qualification spot. While Amoah advanced, his compatriots James Dadzie and Mustapha Bokpin were unfortunately eliminated during the same round. The track also witnessed a historic breakthrough by 17-year-old para-sprinter Hayford Addai. Competing in the Men’s 100m T47 Final, Addai became the first Ghanaian T47 athlete to officially break the 11-second barrier, finishing fifth with a national record time of 10.99 seconds. His achievement was notably recognized by Australian sprinter Jaydon Page, who praised the teenager's remarkable pace and potential.
Despite these triumphs, the Ghanaian delegation has had to contend with challenging environmental factors in Scotland. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), indicated that adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, have significantly impacted athlete performances. Akpokavie noted that while the wet conditions have hampered the ability of some athletes to reach their peak results, the spirit within the camp remains high. As the competition enters its next phase, national attention turns to the 200m final and upcoming events in weightlifting, where Abdul Salim Adjei is expected to compete, as Team Ghana hunts for further podium finishes.
