The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced a dual approach to improving operations at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), focusing on major infrastructure upgrades and enhanced professional standards. Managing Director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare confirmed that the renovation of Terminal 2 is on track for completion by December 2026. This $15 million project is designed to revitalize the terminal's capacity to handle both domestic and international traffic, providing much-needed relief to the heavily utilized Terminal 3. During a recent oversight visit with the parliamentary Roads and Transportation Committee, GACL leadership detailed the scope of the Terminal 2 works. Currently, portions of the facility have been partitioned to maintain domestic flight operations while construction continues on the international wing. By redistributing traffic across both terminals, the GACL aims to significantly reduce congestion and improve the overall passenger experience at Ghana's primary aviation gateway. Parallel to the physical upgrades, the GACL is implementing rigorous measures to protect passengers from unethical practices. Following a high-level stakeholder meeting on August 5, 2026, the company introduced a dedicated reporting hotline and a 'name and shame' policy targeting personnel involved in extortion. These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to eradicate what officials described as unacceptable practices that tarnish the reputation of GACL-operated facilities. These developments come at a critical time as Ghana seeks to solidify its position as a regional aviation hub under the administration of President John Mahama. The combination of modern infrastructure and stricter ethical oversight is expected to bolster investor confidence and enhance the tourism sector. As the December 2026 deadline approaches, the GACL continues to work closely with parliamentary and industry stakeholders to ensure that Kotoka International Airport meets international benchmarks for both efficiency and integrity.
