A severe rainstorm has struck the Neindogu suburb of Yendi in the Northern Region, resulting in the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl and leaving several other residents injured. The disaster, which occurred early Thursday morning, caused widespread destruction across the community, completely destroying or severely damaging approximately 40 houses. The intensity of the storm has left more than 300 individuals displaced, forcing many to seek refuge with relatives while others are reportedly sleeping in the open.
Witnesses described the storm as being accompanied by exceptionally fierce winds that ripped off roofs and led to the collapse of several mud-brick structures. Beyond residential buildings, the storm's path of destruction included uprooted trees and downed electricity poles, which further complicated the situation for the local population. While the deceased girl has been buried in accordance with local customs, those who sustained injuries are currently receiving medical attention at a nearby health facility.
Muhammed Muntaru, the local assembly member for the area, confirmed the scale of the devastation, noting that women and children are among the most vulnerable of the displaced residents. According to Muntaru, the loss of property has been absolute for some families, who now face the dual challenge of homelessness and the ongoing threat of further inclement weather. He emphasized that the community is in urgent need of humanitarian support to prevent a burgeoning housing crisis.
Officials from the Yendi Municipal Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have visited Neindogu to conduct a formal assessment of the damage and coordinate relief efforts. However, residents are urgently appealing to the government, non-governmental organizations, and benevolent individuals for essential supplies, including food, clothing, and building materials to begin the reconstruction process. As the rainy season continues, NADMO has issued a call for heightened vigilance among residents in low-lying and disaster-prone areas to prevent further loss of life.
