The World Bank Group's World Development Report 2026 has identified artificial intelligence (AI) as a pivotal "lifeline" for developing nations, potentially enabling these economies to achieve a century's worth of progress within a single decade. Amidst a global backdrop of weak economic growth, the report suggests that AI offers a unique opportunity to leapfrog traditional development hurdles. While high-income countries face a higher risk of job automation at 14.2%, developing nations are less exposed with only a 4.5% risk. More importantly, approximately 16.2% of jobs in low and middle-income countries are positioned to benefit significantly from AI integration, a figure that nearly matches the 18.7% potential in wealthier nations.
To capture these gains, the report emphasizes the importance of adapting low-cost AI tools to address specific local challenges in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and agriculture. By integrating AI into these areas, developing countries can enhance productivity and service delivery in ways that were previously cost-prohibitive. However, the World Bank warns that the benefits of this technology are not guaranteed. Success depends heavily on the ability of governments to address fundamental infrastructure gaps, particularly in stable power supply, digital connectivity, and technical skills development.
The report advocates for a strategic three-step framework: adopt, adapt, and advance. This approach encourages nations to first integrate existing AI technologies, then customize them for local contexts, and finally contribute to the advancement of the field. Without swift and responsible governmental intervention, there is a significant risk that AI could exacerbate existing inequalities and erode public trust in institutions. Therefore, the World Bank underscores that responsible governance and investment in foundational infrastructure are essential to ensuring that AI serves as a tool for inclusive progress rather than a source of further division.
