Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner propose Russian diesel deal to Ukraine

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, acting as envoys for U.S. President Donald Trump, held talks with Ukrainian officials in Miami to discuss a proposal involving Russian diesel exports. The meeting centered on using the energy deal as a diplomatic lever to encourage Moscow to return to the negotiating table to end the ongoing conflict. While the U.S. side views the proposal as a means to "soften" President Vladimir Putin's stance, the initiative has met with significant pushback from the Ukrainian delegation and sparked debate among American lawmakers.
The proposed agreement would allow for the export of Russian diesel, a move President Trump has defended as a potential benefit for U.S. energy prices. However, Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have expressed deep skepticism, characterizing the plan as a concession that could provide financial support to Russia's military operations without securing meaningful commitments from the Kremlin. The atmosphere of the discussions was reportedly tense, with Zelenskyy criticizing the approach and Trump suggesting that a change in Ukrainian leadership might be necessary to resolve the conflict.
Beyond energy, the Miami meeting touched on security guarantees for Ukraine. The Ukrainian side remains wary that the U.S. approach might appease Russia without providing the robust protections Ukraine requires. Furthermore, the envoys discussed Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, which Trump claimed were hindering diplomatic efforts, though experts suggest these military actions are a direct response to broader regional conflicts. While no formal agreements were reached during the session, Ukraine indicated a potential openness to an energy-focused ceasefire if Russia demonstrates a reciprocal commitment.
The talks highlight a growing rift in diplomatic strategy between the Trump administration and the Ukrainian government. As U.S. lawmakers raise concerns about the ethics of an energy deal that could fund the Russian war machine, the path toward a negotiated settlement remains fraught with obstacles. The outcome of these preliminary discussions suggests that while the U.S. is exploring unconventional economic avenues to end the war, the fundamental issues of security and sovereignty continue to be the primary sticking points for the Ukrainian leadership.
