Tragedy struck the Central Region on September 1 as violent clashes between residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba left three people dead and at least 15 others injured. The violence erupted around 10:40 a.m. when an estimated 300 armed individuals stormed the New Winneba township, reportedly attacking residents and vandalizing properties. The confrontation was sparked by a long-standing land dispute, with Gomoa Oguaakrom residents allegedly protesting the sale of their lands by New Winneba authorities. The situation escalated rapidly as attackers fired gunshots and attempted to forcibly lock local shops, prompting a defensive response from the community.
The Ghana Police Service, acting on orders from the Inspector-General of Police, deployed a heavy reinforcement team to the area to restore order. The deployment included two armored vehicles and a significant increase in personnel to contain the mob and prevent further bloodshed. Among the injured was a police officer who was caught in the crossfire during the initial unrest. Chief Inspector Isaac Entie, the Deputy Central Regional Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the situation has since been brought under control, though the atmosphere in the township remains tense as security forces maintain a high-profile presence.
Following the incident, the Central Regional Police Command successfully apprehended seven suspects in connection with the attack. These individuals are currently in custody assisting with investigations as authorities work to identify other perpetrators involved in the fatalities and property damage. The injured victims, whose numbers are reported between 15 and 19 by various sources, are receiving medical attention at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital. Medical staff are working to stabilize those with gunshot wounds and other injuries sustained during the hour-long battle.
Police investigations into the exact cause of the violence and the circumstances surrounding the three deaths are ongoing. Authorities have urged residents of both Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba to remain calm and cooperate with security forces to ensure a permanent resolution to the dispute. As the community begins to assess the damage, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatility of land ownership issues in the region and the urgent need for mediation between the traditional and administrative authorities of the neighboring towns.
