The Accra Circuit Court has remanded Vincent Apetor, an unemployed man, into custody after he pleaded guilty to a charge of fraudulent breach of trust involving GH¢114,000. Presided over by Mr. Joseph Y. Kunsong, the court heard how Apetor squandered the substantial sum, which had been entrusted to him by his then-romantic partner for travel purposes, on football betting. Apetor is scheduled to be sentenced on July 8, 2026, following his admission of guilt in the face of the evidence presented against him.
The case stems from a relationship where the complainant, seeking to improve her and Apetor's chances of securing visas for travel to Holland, secured loans to build up the balance in a shared bank account. Unbeknownst to her, Apetor secretly obtained an ATM card and a cheque book linked to the account. He proceeded to systematically withdraw the entire balance, concealing his actions from his partner while the funds were being depleted. The prosecution noted that the complainant believed the funds were being kept safe to demonstrate financial stability for their visa applications.
The fraudulent activity came to light in August 2025 when the complainant discovered the unauthorized withdrawals and reported the matter to the police. During the subsequent investigation, Apetor admitted that he had used a significant portion of the money to fund his football betting habit. Although police managed to recover GH¢35,000 from the accused, a balance of GH¢79,000 remains unaccounted for and has yet to be returned to the victim, who is now left to settle the loans she originally took out.
This case highlights the growing concern over the misuse of digital banking tools to facilitate domestic financial abuse and the devastating impact of sports betting on personal financial responsibilities. As Apetor awaits his final sentencing in 2026, the case serves as a cautionary tale regarding the security of shared financial assets and the severe legal consequences of breaching trust within personal relationships. The court has directed that he remains in custody until the final judgment is delivered.
