The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Vincent Apetor, an unemployed man, to 14 days in prison after he admitted to fraudulently spending GH¢114,000 belonging to his former girlfriend. Presided over by Mr. Joseph Y. Kunsong, the court also imposed a GH¢3,000 fine on Apetor, with a six-month default imprisonment sentence should he fail to pay the fine. The conviction follows Apetor’s guilty plea to the charge of fraudulent breach of trust. The complainant, a secretary, had reportedly secured a loan of GH¢114,000 specifically to bolster her bank statement and improve her chances of obtaining a travel visa. However, Apetor, who had access to the funds, secretly withdrew the money from the complainant's account. Instead of using the funds for the intended purpose, he channeled the significant sum into football betting, leading to the near-total depletion of the loan. The fraud came to light when the complainant discovered that her funds were missing and reported the matter to the police. Investigations led to Apetor's arrest in August 2025. During the investigation, the police managed to recover GH¢35,000 from the accused, which was subsequently returned to the victim. This left an outstanding balance of GH¢79,000, which Apetor confessed to having lost through his gambling activities. In addition to the custodial sentence and fine, the court has ordered Apetor to refund the outstanding GH¢79,000 to his former girlfriend after serving his prison term. The case highlights the increasing prevalence of fraudulent breach of trust involving personal relationships and the devastating impact of gambling addiction on financial security.
