An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Vincent Apetor, an unemployed man, to 14 days in prison after he admitted to spending GH¢114,000 belonging to his former girlfriend on football betting. The presiding judge, Mr. Joseph Y. Kunsong, also imposed a fine of GH¢3,000 on the convict. Should Apetor fail to pay the fine, he faces an additional six months of imprisonment. Beyond the immediate custodial sentence and fine, the court has ordered the convict to refund the outstanding balance of GH¢79,000 to the complainant after serving his time.
The case unfolded after the complainant, a secretary by profession, secured a loan of GH¢114,000 intended to bolster her bank statement and improve the couple’s chances of obtaining travel visas. However, Apetor took advantage of his access to the funds, secretly withdrawing the money to fuel a gambling habit. The fraud was discovered in August 2025 when the complainant noticed the significant depletion of the funds and reported the matter to the police, leading to Apetor's subsequent arrest.
During the proceedings, Apetor pleaded guilty to the charge of fraudulent breach of trust. He confessed to the court that he had used the majority of the loan on various football bets. Police investigations managed to recover GH¢35,000 from him at the time of his arrest, which accounts for the remaining GH¢79,000 debt he is now legally obligated to repay. The prosecution detailed how the trust between the two was violated, transforming a financial plan intended for their mutual future into a total loss due to gambling addiction.
This ruling highlights the increasing judicial scrutiny on fraudulent breach of trust cases involving personal relationships and digital betting platforms. By ordering a full refund in addition to the prison sentence, the court emphasized the necessity of restitution for victims of financial fraud. Apetor’s case serves as a cautionary tale regarding the legal and personal consequences of misappropriating funds for high-risk gambling activities.
