The Ministry of Health has established a seven-member investigative committee to probe the underlying causes of recent student unrest at the Nursing Training College in Techiman-Krobo, located in the Bono East Region. This intervention follows a peaceful demonstration by the student body that led to the temporary closure of the institution on July 24, 2026. The committee, chaired by Professor Vida Nyagre Yekong, is tasked with providing a clear roadmap for the reopening of the school and ensuring that governance and academic standards are restored.
The unrest was triggered by growing student dissatisfaction regarding perceived unfair treatment by the college administration. Key grievances highlighted by the students included significant concerns over governance, student welfare, and academic management. While local leaders and traditional authorities initially attempted to mediate the dispute to prevent a shutdown, these efforts failed to produce a lasting solution, necessitating the formal closure of the college to maintain safety and allow for a comprehensive inquiry into the students' claims.
Under the leadership of Professor Yekong, the newly formed committee has been granted a broad mandate to establish the facts surrounding the demonstration and the subsequent breakdown of order. The group is tasked with reviewing existing administrative protocols and assessing the college's compliance with national policies. A critical part of their work involves extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholders, including the student body, teaching and non-teaching staff, management, parents, and traditional authorities within the Techiman-Krobo community.
The Ministry of Health has set a deadline of August 11, 2026, for the committee to submit its final report. This document will serve as the primary guide for the Ministry's decision-making process regarding the college’s reopening and the potential restructuring of its leadership. Beyond addressing the immediate concerns that led to the July closure, the investigation aims to implement long-term recommendations that will prevent future disruptions and foster a stable learning environment for Ghana’s future healthcare professionals.
