Families Announce Funeral Arrangements for George Christian Papa Mends and Lawrence Kobena Nsarko Otoo

Prominent Ghanaian families have formally announced the final funeral arrangements for two distinguished individuals, George Christian Papa Mends and Lawrence Kobena Nsarko Otoo, Esq. Both men, who were 59 and 62 years old respectively, will be honored with final rites in Accra during the coming months. These announcements bring together a wide network of families from the Volta and Central Regions, marking a period of mourning and celebration of life for their respective communities. The family of George Christian Papa Mends, who passed away suddenly on August 9, 2026, has scheduled his final rites for the first weekend of November. Representing a broad lineage including the Ahiekpor, Gaza, and Tay Agbozo families of Dzelukope, as well as the Kwawukume family of Anloga, the funeral will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Kaneshie. On Saturday, November 7, 2026, a filing-past will occur between 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM, followed immediately by a burial mass. While the interment will be a private affair, the family has invited all sympathizers to a thanksgiving mass and a subsequent reception at the family residence in Awudome Estates. The prescribed attire is red and black for Saturday and black and white for Sunday. In a parallel announcement, the Nana Kwei Aminsah Nsona Royal Family of Bakaano, Cape Coast, has shared the home-going details for Lawrence Kobena Nsarko Otoo, Esq. His final services will be held at the Mary Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Similar to the Mends family, the Otoo family has opted for no wake-keeping, focusing instead on a dignified filing-past and a private burial ceremony. A thanksgiving service will be held to conclude the funeral rites. Mourners attending Mr. Otoo’s services are requested to wear black on Saturday and black and white for the Sunday thanksgiving. These ceremonies serve as a significant moment for the bereaved families to receive support from the public. For the Mends family, coordination is being handled by representatives both in Ghana and the United States, including Kofi Nyaho-Tamakloe and Joan Tilly Kofi-Opata. Both announcements emphasize that all friends and sympathizers are welcome to pay their respects as these two men are laid to their final rest, highlighting the enduring importance of community and family solidarity in Ghanaian funeral traditions.
