U.S. Embassy in Accra Announces Two-Week Suspension of Routine Consular Services for Maintenance

The United States Embassy in Accra has announced a temporary suspension of most routine consular services scheduled to take place from July 20 to July 31, 2026. This two-week pause is necessary to facilitate essential facility maintenance within the embassy grounds. While routine operations are set to resume on Monday, August 3, 2026, the embassy is urging the public to plan ahead for their visa and passport needs to avoid disruptions during this period. This scheduled maintenance is a standard procedure aimed at ensuring the long-term efficiency and safety of the mission's facilities.

During this maintenance window, the suspension will impact a wide range of services, including routine visa processing and most routine services for U.S. citizens living in or visiting Ghana. Specifically, walk-in notarial services and the processing of Consular Reports of Death Abroad (CRDA) will be unavailable for the duration of the closure. However, the embassy has made provisions for certain essential tasks to continue. Adult passport renewals submitted via the drop-box system will still be processed, and individuals who have already been notified that their documents are ready for pickup may collect them on Thursdays between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Despite the halt in routine services, the U.S. Embassy emphasized that emergency assistance for U.S. citizens remains a priority. The embassy has reiterated that this suspension is strictly for scheduled maintenance and is not indicative of any broader change in diplomatic operations or visa policy, aiming to minimize the impact on the public while necessary repairs are conducted.
