The Upper East Regional Police Command has successfully apprehended seven suspected armed robbers believed to be behind a wave of criminal activities in Zebilla, Garu, and Binduri. The operation, which was intelligence-led, involved the Police Intelligence Directorate, the newly established Black Cobra Unit, and local community watchdogs. The suspects, whose ages range from 20 to 41, were arrested following a series of reports regarding violent robberies and are now assisting the police with their investigations into the broader criminal network in the region.
During the investigation, the suspects reportedly confessed to being part of a larger robbery syndicate. Their alleged activities include the gunpoint robbery of two victims who were deprived of Yamaha scooters valued at a total of GH₵62,000. These victims have since positively identified the suspects as the perpetrators. Subsequent searches conducted at the residences of the suspects yielded significant evidence, including unregistered motorbikes, suspected illicit drugs, and cash amounting to GH₵29,550, which police believe to be the proceeds of their criminal operations.
The suspects provided investigators with critical information regarding their logistical support, claiming their weapons were supplied by a contact based in Bawku. This revelation highlights the interconnected nature of criminal syndicates operating within the northern sector of the country. According to police reports, the suspects had previously threatened their victims with violence to prevent them from reporting the crimes, emphasizing the dangerous tactics employed by the group to evade law enforcement.
The seven suspects appeared in court recently and have been remanded into police custody until their next appearance, scheduled for September 23, 2026. The Upper East Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to dismantling the larger network of which these suspects were a part. Investigations remain active as law enforcement officers work to track down and arrest the alleged weapons supplier and other accomplices linked to the gang to ensure long-term security for residents in the affected districts.
