The Upper East Regional Police Command has successfully apprehended seven suspected armed robbers during a high-stakes, intelligence-led operation targeting criminal activities in the Zebilla, Garu, and Binduri districts. The crackdown was a collaborative effort involving multiple units, including the Police Intelligence Directorate, the specialized Black Cobra Unit, and the Zebilla Community Watchdogs. The suspects, who range in age from 20 to 41, are believed to be part of a sophisticated syndicate responsible for a wave of recent violent crimes across the region.
Following the arrests, police conducted thorough searches of the suspects' residences, leading to the recovery of GH¢29,550 in cash, which authorities believe to be proceeds from criminal activities. Officers also seized two unregistered motorbikes, various robbing instruments, and illicit drugs. The operation gained significant momentum when two victims stepped forward to positively identify the suspects. The victims reported that the gang had previously robbed them of two Yamaha scooters, which have a combined market value of approximately GH¢62,000.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in the robberies and admitted to being part of a larger criminal network. Crucially, they revealed that this broader organization supplied the weaponry used in their operations, prompting the police to launch further investigations into the source of these illegal arms. This breakthrough provides critical insight into the logistics of regional criminal networks and the pathways through which illegal weapons are distributed to local cells.
The suspects have been formally remanded in custody and are scheduled to make their next appearance in court on September 23, 2026. The Regional Command has reiterated its commitment to flushing out criminal elements and ensuring the safety of residents in the Upper East Region. This successful operation highlights the growing effectiveness of community-based policing, as the involvement of local watchdogs proved instrumental in locating and apprehending the suspects.
