The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Basic School in Ho has celebrated its inaugural Thanksgiving, Graduation, and Awards Ceremony, marking a historic milestone for the institution. The event, which brought together university officials, parents, and community members, honored the transition of Kindergarten 2 (KG2) pupils to Basic One and the graduation of Basic Nine students from Junior High School (JHS). Beyond academic recognition, the ceremony highlighted a unique partnership with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), which saw the graduates commissioned as Youth Anti-Drug Advocates to champion a drug-free future within their communities.
Keynote speaker Dr. Dickson Tsey addressed the gathering, emphasizing that quality basic education serves as the bedrock for national development and personal success. He urged parents and educators to prioritize character formation alongside academic excellence, noting that shaping the moral compass of students is essential for navigating future challenges. Supporting this sentiment, Professor Evelyn Korkor Ansah, the UHAS Chairperson, expressed profound gratitude for the school's progress since its inception. She noted that the maiden ceremony reflected the institution's commitment to excellence and its growing reputation within the Ho municipality.
A significant highlight of the event was the formal commissioning of the JHS graduates following intensive training by NACOC. These students are now equipped to educate their peers on the dangers of substance abuse, acting as first-line advocates in the fight against narcotics. Mr. Seth Korgah, the Head of School, underscored the importance of this initiative, stating that it empowers students to take responsibility for their well-being and that of their peers. The ceremony also showcased the creative talents of the students through cultural performances and an exhibition of their academic work, providing a platform for the community to witness the holistic nature of their education.
The celebration concluded with the presentation of awards to outstanding learners and dedicated teachers who have contributed to the school’s early success. As UHAS Basic School looks toward the future, the administration aims to continue fostering an environment that encourages both intellectual growth and social responsibility. By integrating advocacy programs like the NACOC training into the school culture, the institution is positioning its graduates not just as scholars, but as proactive leaders ready to contribute positively to Ghanaian society.
