The University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) has achieved a significant milestone in legal education after receiving official accreditation from the General Legal Council (GLC) to offer a one-year Pre-Bar Professional Law Course. This accreditation makes UBIDS one of only 19 authorized institutions in Ghana permitted to run the programme, which is designed to help Bachelor of Laws (LLB) graduates prepare for Professional Law Courses and national bar examinations. The announcement coincided with the university’s second congregation ceremony, marking a new chapter in the institution's contribution to Ghana’s legal fraternity.
During the graduation ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Emmanuel Derbile highlighted the rapid growth and academic excellence of the UBIDS School of Law. A total of 70 LLB students graduated this year, bringing the university's cumulative law graduate count to 133. Professor Derbile emphasized the effectiveness of the curriculum, noting that nearly 70% of the school's first batch of graduates successfully passed the competitive Ghana School of Law entrance examinations. This achievement underscores the university's commitment to high standards in legal training despite being a relatively young institution.
The event was attended by several high-profile dignitaries, including the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, and Dr. Benjamin Kumbuor. Speaker Bagbin commended the university for its resilience and growth under resource constraints and reaffirmed his support for the institution's continued development. The speakers collectively addressed the importance of legal education in national development, calling for improved infrastructure and stronger industry collaboration to ensure that legal training remains relevant to the evolving needs of the Ghanaian state.
As the university moves forward with its newly accredited Pre-Bar programme, it aligns with broader national reforms in legal education aimed at expanding access and improving the quality of legal practitioners. The new graduates were urged to pursue excellence and maintain ethical standards as they transition into the professional sphere. With this new accreditation, UBIDS is positioned to become a central hub for legal training in the northern part of Ghana, providing a vital pathway for aspiring lawyers to navigate the rigours of the national bar certification process.
