A tragic head-on collision between a Nigeria-registered bus and a heavy-duty tipper truck on the Elubo-Takoradi section of the N1 highway has left two people dead and seven others fighting for their lives. The accident occurred on June 25, 2026, near the community of Abease in the Western Region. Initial investigations by emergency responders indicate that the crash was triggered when the bus driver attempted to swerve around a deep pothole, leading to a direct impact with the oncoming truck.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was alerted to the scene at approximately 11:53 am. Upon arrival, fire crews encountered a gruesome scene where the front sections of both vehicles had been completely crushed, trapping several passengers inside the wreckage. Six individuals were found trapped—five in the bus and one within the tipper truck—while three other victims had been pulled from the mangled vehicles by bystanders prior to the arrival of professional responders. The GNFS team conducted a complicated rescue operation, extricating the remaining victims and securing the area by cooling the engines and disconnecting batteries to prevent potential fires.
The fatalities identified include the driver of the bus and his assistant. While the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, his assistant succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported for medical attention. The seven survivors, who sustained life-threatening injuries, are currently receiving emergency treatment at the Elubo Government Hospital. The severity of the impact has highlighted the extreme danger posed by high-speed collisions on this major international transit corridor.
In the wake of this disaster, road safety advocates and local residents are renewing calls for the government to undertake urgent repairs on the hazardous Elubo-Takoradi stretch. The presence of significant potholes on the N1 highway has long been cited as a major risk to commuters and transport operators. Advocates argue that without immediate infrastructural intervention, the Abease-Elubo section will continue to serve as a high-risk zone, posing a persistent threat to both local and international travelers.
