A major two-year community development initiative, the Ting Labginsim project, has been launched in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region. Designed to empower local residents, the project aims to improve access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services and enhance livelihoods across 100 communities. This initiative represents a significant shift toward community agency and governmental accountability, ensuring that development priorities are determined and managed by the residents themselves rather than external actors.
The project is a collaborative effort between Advocates for Community Alternatives (ACA), Spark MicroGrants, Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), and the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly. Central to the initiative is an $800,000 funding commitment, where each of the 100 participating communities will receive a microgrant of $8,000 to address their specific local challenges. Nana Ama Nketia-Quaidoo, representing the partnership, emphasized that the success of the project hinges on community engagement and ownership, moving away from a model of dependency toward active participation in local governance.
Implementation will follow ACA’s Facilitated Collective Action Process (FCAP), a three-phase approach that guides communities through identifying, prioritizing, and solving their development needs. To ensure the project is equitable, special emphasis is being placed on the inclusion of vulnerable groups within the decision-making process. The West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly is also providing additional financial support and administrative backing, reinforcing the link between the local government and the citizens it serves.
To ensure long-term sustainability, a dedicated steering committee has been established to oversee progress and address challenges as they arise. The goal is for these communities to maintain the capacity for collective action and planning even after the formal two-year project period ends. By fostering a culture of accountability and self-reliance, the Ting Labginsim project aims to create a lasting blueprint for sustainable, community-driven development in Northern Ghana.
