The Northern Regional Police Command has successfully intercepted 170 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp during a targeted operation at Katariga, near Tamale. The operation, carried out on July 27, 2026, was led by the "Red Maria" Special Operations Team as part of a broader regional strategy to dismantle drug trafficking networks. Two suspects, identified as 32-year-old Godwin Yamegi and 33-year-old Seth Amekuse, were apprehended during the sting and are currently assisting law enforcement with their investigations.
The breakthrough occurred when the Special Task Force first intercepted Yamegi, who was found in possession of two parcels of the suspected narcotic. Under interrogation, Yamegi cooperated with the officers and identified Amekuse as his primary supplier. This information led the police to Amekuse’s residence, where a comprehensive search resulted in the discovery of 168 additional parcels. Deputy Northern Regional Crime Officer, ASP Richard Ackumey, highlighted that the intelligence-led approach was critical in ensuring the success of the mission and the subsequent arrests.
ASP Ackumey emphasized the police command's unwavering dedication to purging the region of illegal drug activities. He noted that the cooperation between the police and the local community played a vital role in the operation's outcome, praising residents for providing the credible information that initiated the investigation. The seizure represents a significant blow to the local narcotics trade and underscores the effectiveness of specialized units like the Red Maria task force in maintaining public safety.
Both suspects remain in custody and are expected to face prosecution in court once investigations are finalized. The Northern Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to public security and continues to urge citizens to report suspicious activities. This successful operation serves as a warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade that law enforcement remains vigilant in its efforts to enforce the law and protect the community.
