Stephen Coates, a former legal counsel for Twitter, has officially launched a new social media venture called Twitter.now under his startup, Operation Bluebird. The platform seeks to reclaim and revive the iconic Twitter name and bird branding that was largely phased out following Elon Musk’s high-profile 2023 rebranding of the service to X. Currently in its early testing phase, the project aims to capitalize on the deep cultural affinity users still hold for the original Twitter identity while introducing a fundamentally different approach to platform governance and moderation.
At the heart of the new platform is a proprietary technology known as the VERA AI system. Unlike traditional social media moderation, which often relies on centralized, top-down enforcement of rules, Twitter.now intends to give users unprecedented control over their own digital environments. The VERA AI system reportedly assigns trust scores to posts and accounts, allowing individual users to calibrate their feeds according to their personal comfort levels and preferences. This shift toward user-centric moderation is framed as a solution to the ongoing challenges of content policing that have plagued mainstream social networks for years.
The launch has sparked an immediate and intense legal confrontation with Elon Musk’s X. Operation Bluebird’s legal strategy rests on the assertion that X effectively abandoned its rights to the Twitter trademark and related intellectual property by decisively pivoting to the X branding. Consequently, Coates has applied for new trademarks for the Twitter name to secure the startup's standing. In response, X has initiated legal proceedings alleging trademark infringement, arguing that the Twitter brand remains active and legally protected under their corporate umbrella.
As the dispute moves through the courts, the future of Twitter.now remains uncertain, with a judge yet to issue a final ruling on whether X truly forfeited its famous trademark. The outcome of this case could set a significant legal precedent regarding brand abandonment in the digital age. For now, Operation Bluebird continues to refine its platform, betting that the combination of nostalgic branding and innovative AI moderation will be enough to lure users away from established competitors and back to a familiar blue bird environment.
