The Somanya District Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation into the death of an unidentified woman whose body was found hanging from a tree in a bush at Brigade, a suburb of Somanya. Discovered on a Thursday following reports from local residents of a pervasive foul smell, the body was in an advanced state of decomposition. Preliminary assessments by law enforcement, led by District Police Commander ASP Nana Akomeah, suggest that the death may involve foul play, as initial observations noted signs of potential assault before the body was suspended.
According to police reports, the deceased is estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old. Based on the level of decomposition, investigators believe the body may have been at the location for approximately three weeks. The circumstances surrounding the discovery have raised significant concerns within the community, prompting the police to treat the matter as a high-priority criminal case. The remains have since been transported to the Yilo Krobo District Hospital morgue, where an autopsy is expected to provide definitive information regarding the exact cause and timing of death.
Efforts to identify the woman are currently underway, though the advanced state of decomposition has made visual recognition impossible. The police are cross-referencing recent missing persons reports to find a match. While a report filed on June 17 by a man searching for his wife was initially considered, the complainant confirmed upon inspection that the deceased was not his spouse. Furthermore, investigators have reached out to the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) to determine if the victim could be a student previously reported missing, though no conclusive link has been established yet.
In addition to the criminal investigation, local authorities are collaborating with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to implement public health precautions and mitigate any health risks posed to the Brigade area by the decomposition. The Somanya Police Command has issued an urgent appeal to the general public, particularly families with missing female relatives, to come forward and assist with the identification process. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or provide information that could aid in resolving the case as the investigation continues.
