Residents of Leklebi-Agbesia in the Volta Region have seen a significant improvement in their access to potable water following the inauguration of a new mechanised borehole facility. The project, designed to address long-standing challenges with clean water access in the rural community, boasts a substantial storage capacity of 10,500 litres. This intervention is expected to directly enhance the living standards and health outcomes for hundreds of community members who previously struggled with unreliable and potentially unsafe water sources.
The facility was funded through the personal philanthropy of Dr. Sodzi-Sodzi Tetteh and facilitated by Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana) under its flagship Safe Water Project. During the commissioning ceremony, representatives from CFF-Ghana underscored the importance of such interventions in rural Ghana, noting that the Volta Region alone requires approximately 900 additional boreholes to fully meet the water demands of underserved populations. The collaboration highlights a successful model of private individual contributions working in tandem with non-governmental organizations to deliver essential infrastructure where it is most needed.
Beyond providing immediate access to water, the project is viewed as a catalyst for broader community development. Local leaders and stakeholders emphasized that improved water access is intrinsically linked to better health outcomes and enhanced educational performance, as it reduces the time children spend fetching water and lowers the incidence of waterborne diseases. To ensure the project's long-term viability, community leaders have pledged to oversee the strict maintenance of the facility, urging residents to take full ownership of the infrastructure to prevent breakdowns and ensure it serves the community for years to come.
