Samuel Cudjoe Hanu, the acting Head of Research at the Mental Health Authority (MHA), has issued a passionate plea to Ghanaian men to prioritize their psychological well-being by breaking the silence surrounding mental health struggles. Speaking during a targeted outreach program organized by Mental Health 4 Men (M4M Ghana), Hanu highlighted a growing crisis where societal expectations often discourage men from expressing vulnerability. With over 2.3 million people in Ghana currently affected by various forms of mental illness, the MHA official emphasized that the culture of suffering in silence is contributing to a concerning rise in suicide rates across the country.
The outreach initiative focused heavily on the restrictive societal norms that pressure men to appear emotionally invincible regardless of their internal struggles. Hanu noted that these expectations create significant barriers to help-seeking, leading many to reach a breaking point before accessing professional care. By addressing the deep-seated stigma associated with mental health, M4M Ghana and the MHA aim to create a safe environment where men feel empowered to discuss their challenges without fear of judgment. This shift in perspective is viewed as critical to reversing the trend of late-stage mental health complications that often result in tragic outcomes.
To facilitate better access to care, the Mental Health Authority is encouraging individuals to utilize professional resources rather than attempting to navigate severe distress alone. Hanu highlighted the availability of a toll-free helpline designed to provide immediate assistance and psychological support to those in crisis. The program also educated participants on recognizing early warning signs of mental distress, such as persistent sadness, withdrawal, or changes in behavior. By fostering community-level support and encouraging early intervention, the MHA hopes to build a more resilient society where mental health is treated with the same urgency as physical health.
