Samuel Nartey George refutes claims he ordered KNUST Twi AI model

Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Samuel Nartey George, has dismissed reports suggesting he issued a directive to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model for the Twi language. The Minister clarified that while conversations regarding the promotion of indigenous languages in technology are ongoing, no formal order was given to the institution. He emphasized that the role of the ministry is to support innovation rather than micromanage academic research.
The clarification follows media reports, notably from JoyNews, which suggested the Minister had specifically tasked researchers at KNUST's Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) with the project. In a statement shared on social media, George explained that a report by the media outlet misinterpreted his discussions with postgraduate researchers at the university. He noted that while he had engaged in conversations about AI developments for Ghanaian languages, his remarks were descriptive of a vision for the sector rather than a formal administrative directive.
Addressing the importance of accurate reporting, the Minister highlighted that the development of AI systems catering to local languages is a significant technical undertaking. He pointed out that while the government is keen on seeing such technologies flourish to enhance digital inclusion, the scientific process remains within the purview of academic and research institutions. George underscored that misrepresenting policy discussions can create confusion regarding the autonomy of research labs and the official mandate of the Ministry.
Samuel Nartey George reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a robust digital ecosystem where local languages are not left behind in the global AI race. He commended the researchers at KNUST’s Responsible AI Lab for their pioneering work and encouraged continued collaboration between the state and academia. However, he maintained that such initiatives must be accurately communicated to the public to ensure transparency and preserve the integrity of the nation's technological roadmap.
