The Northern Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has reported a significant success in consumer advocacy, resolving 99.31% of all utility-related complaints during the first half of 2026. Out of 436 formal grievances filed by consumers, 433 were successfully addressed, demonstrating a robust mechanism for conflict resolution between utility providers and the public in Northern Ghana. This high resolution rate underscores the commission's commitment to ensuring that service providers remain accountable to their customers while maintaining operational standards. The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) was the focus of the vast majority of consumer dissatisfaction, accounting for 409 of the lodged complaints. In contrast, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) was the subject of 27 grievances. The data highlights a shift in consumer behavior, as electronic platforms emerged as the primary channel for reporting issues, reflecting a growing reliance on digital accessibility for regulatory oversight and a decrease in traditional walk-in complaints. Most complaints centered on the quality of service, ranging from supply interruptions to technical failures in the distribution network. Beyond merely resolving disputes, the PURC played a pivotal role in facilitating infrastructure enhancements to mitigate recurring issues. These interventions involved a financial commitment exceeding GH¢563,000, which was directed toward upgrading electricity infrastructure to improve reliability and reduce the frequency of outages for residents across the region. The high resolution rate during this period reinforces the PURC's effectiveness as a mediator in the utility sector, particularly in regions where infrastructure challenges are prevalent. As the commission looks toward the second half of the year, the emphasis remains on maintaining high standards of service quality and encouraging utility providers to be more proactive in their maintenance and consumer engagement strategies. This proactive regulatory environment is essential for sustaining consumer trust and fostering economic stability within the Northern Region's utility market.
