Professor Eric Opoku Mensah, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), has unveiled an ambitious vision to establish the institution as the premier center for communication and media education in West Africa and across the continent. Speaking on Joy FM’s Personality Profile, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the necessity of modernizing the university's approach to education to ensure its graduates remain competitive in a rapidly changing global landscape. He aims to reclaim UniMAC’s historical legacy as a top-tier destination for specialized training, drawing on the institution's significant role in shaping media after Ghana’s independence.
Central to this transformation is the urgent need to adapt academic curricula to the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Prof. Mensah highlighted that AI has fundamentally shifted communication and journalism practices, necessitating a complete rethink of traditional teaching methods. He argued that the university must integrate these technological advancements into its core training modules to prepare students for a technology-driven industry. This shift is intended to ensure that UniMAC graduates are not only proficient in media craft but are also pioneers in utilizing digital tools for innovation.
To achieve these goals, the Vice-Chancellor called for a significant increase in government investment to upgrade the university's facilities. He specifically identified the need for state-of-the-art AI laboratories, improved student accommodation, and modernized training resources. Prof. Mensah maintained that such expansion and modernization efforts are vital for attracting more international students and providing a world-class environment for research and practical training. These investments are seen as essential for producing professionals who can navigate and lead within the complex modern media ecosystem.
By aligning UniMAC’s development with contemporary industry demands and historical excellence, Prof. Mensah envisions the university becoming a powerhouse for media, arts, and communication. The proposed reforms seek to position the institution as a leader in specialized education that responds to both local needs and international standards. Ultimately, the successful realization of this vision is expected to bolster Ghana’s reputation as a hub for academic excellence and drive the next phase of media evolution across the African continent.
