Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang Calls for Diversified University Funding as UG Honors Legacy of Prof. Nukunya

Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has underscored the critical need for Ghanaian universities to adopt diversified funding models to ensure long-term sustainability. Speaking at the Ghana Higher Education Summit held at the University of Ghana, the Vice-President addressed the mounting pressure on tertiary institutions caused by rising student enrollments, escalating operational costs, and the limitations of existing public resources. She emphasized that innovative financing is no longer optional but essential for maintaining academic freedom and fostering institutional resilience in an increasingly competitive global landscape.

During her address, Professor Opoku-Agyemang reiterated the government's commitment to providing quality education while challenging university administrators to explore new avenues for revenue generation. By moving beyond traditional funding streams, she noted, universities can better protect their research agendas and improve their international standing. The summit served as a platform for stakeholders to examine the intricate links between sustainable education financing and the advancement of high-impact research within the country.

In a parallel development highlighting the importance of academic excellence and institutional legacy, the University of Ghana formally honored the late Emeritus Professor Godwin Kwaku Nukunya. The university renamed its Sociology Graduate Seminar Room in his memory, recognizing his more than fifty years of dedicated service to the institution. Prof. Nukunya, a distinguished academic who earned his PhD from the London School of Economics in 1964, held several high-ranking positions during his tenure, including that of Pro-Vice-Chancellor. University officials described the newly dedicated room as a living memorial to his significant contributions to the fields of sociology and anthropology.

To further preserve Prof. Nukunya’s academic legacy, his family announced the establishment of a $500 scholarship designated for the best-performing male Sociology students. This gesture highlights the role of private and philanthropic support in the broader mission of sustaining higher education. As the government continues to push for systemic reforms in how universities are funded, such individual acts of support and the formal recognition of academic pioneers remain vital components of Ghana's educational development strategy.
