Omaya Care has emerged as the winner of the maiden Ghana AI Innovation Challenge, held during the Ghana AI Summit & Awards 2026. The startup was awarded a grand prize of GH"25,000 for its groundbreaking AI-driven maternal healthcare platform. This inaugural competition was designed to spotlight local technological ingenuity, identifying homegrown solutions that address critical national challenges through the application of artificial intelligence. The success of the event underscores the growing momentum of the tech ecosystem in Ghana under the current administration. The winning solution focuses on detecting postpartum complications using voice-based AI technology. Critically, the platform is designed for high accessibility, operating through simple phone calls and WhatsApp without the need for smartphones or high-speed mobile data. This feature ensures that life-saving healthcare monitoring is available to women in underserved and rural communities where digital infrastructure may be limited. By leveraging basic mobile networks, Omaya Care bridges the gap between advanced technology and practical healthcare delivery, providing a vital safety net for new mothers. The competition was highly competitive, attracting over 100 entries from various sectors across the country. From this pool, 12 teams were shortlisted to present their innovations to a panel of experts, with Omaya Care eventually outperforming the field. While Omaya Care took the top spot, the event also recognized other significant technological contributions, awarding Certificates of Commendation to Husker AI and SignLink for their respective innovations within the local AI ecosystem. Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Isaac Wiafe emphasized the significance of the challenge in showcasing the capabilities of Ghanaian developers. He noted that the summit proved that local talent is more than capable of creating relevant, tailored AI solutions that address specific Ghanaian needs and social challenges. The achievement of Omaya Care serves as a testament to the potential for AI to transform the country's healthcare sector and sets a benchmark for future technological innovation and investment in the region.
