Odorgonno Senior High School (OSSA) in Accra has been officially upgraded to Category A status, a significant milestone announced during the school’s 86th Anniversary Speech and Prize Giving Day. The announcement was made by the Board Chairman, Reverend Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, who noted that the elevation from Category B will take effect for the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) school placement process. This new classification allows prospective students to select OSSA as their first-choice institution, a move that recognizes the school's sustained growth in academic performance, infrastructure, and overall discipline.
Speaking on the theme "From Roots to Wings: Empowering the Learner through Rich Culture," stakeholders emphasized that the Category A status brings with it a heightened responsibility to maintain excellence. Professor Smile Dzisi, representing the Minister of Education, highlighted that academic success must be paired with strong character, urging students to reject negative influences and uphold integrity. Reverend Dr. Tetteh commended the collaborative efforts of the government, including the support of President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Education, in achieving this feat. He stressed that the school must now work harder to justify its new standing among the nation’s elite educational institutions.
Despite the celebration, the school leadership pointed out critical areas that require urgent attention to meet the demands of its upgraded status. The Headmaster, Mr. Patrick K. Mensah, acknowledged the significant progress made but highlighted ongoing challenges, specifically the lack of a modern science laboratory and inadequate ICT infrastructure. These sentiments were echoed by the Guest Speaker, Professor Nii Tetteh Addy, who advocated for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the curriculum to ensure students remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
The 86th anniversary event served as a platform to rally alumni and community leaders for further development. The Headmaster praised the alumni association for their continuous contributions toward improving school conditions but noted that more support is needed to expand facilities to accommodate the expected increase in student interest. As Odorgonno Senior High School transitions into this new era of excellence, the focus remains on leveraging its rich cultural heritage to empower learners with the skills and discipline necessary for national development.
