The Bono Regional Directorate of the National Youth Authority (NYA) has issued a stern warning regarding the escalating trend of drug abuse among Ghana's youth, describing it as a fundamental threat to the country’s future development. Speaking at a community clean-up event in Kwatire to mark the launch of Youth Month, the NYA Bono Regional Director, Desmond Asaase, emphasized that the surge in substance misuse requires immediate and sustained intervention from all stakeholders to protect the nation's human capital.
To combat this growing crisis, the NYA is spearheading a comprehensive region-wide sensitization campaign. This initiative targets diverse sectors of the community, including schools and churches, to educate young people on the devastating consequences of narcotics. Director Asaase specifically highlighted a concerning rise in severe health complications, such as liver and kidney diseases, which are increasingly being diagnosed in young patients due to chronic substance misuse. He urged the youth to take personal responsibility for their health and serve as peer advocates against drug consumption within their social circles.
The call to action was integrated into a broader environmental and social welfare program in the region. The clean-up exercise in Kwatire involved local residents and students, reflecting a holistic approach to public health that links environmental sanitation with physical well-being. During the event, local government representatives and the Municipal Chief Executive acknowledged the social challenges facing the youth and pledged to support the NYA’s efforts through infrastructure improvements and enhanced waste management systems in the community.
As Youth Month activities continue, the NYA remains focused on providing the youth with constructive outlets for their energy while addressing the root causes of addiction. The authority maintains that the fight against drug abuse requires a unified front involving parents, traditional leaders, and religious organizations. By combining education with community engagement and structural development, the NYA hopes to significantly curb the prevalence of drug misuse and ensure a healthier, more productive future for the younger generation.
