President Mahama Visits Flood-Hit Hohoe as Ibrahim Mahama Pledges 5,000 Bags of Cement for Rebuilding

More than 5,336 residents across ten communities in the Hohoe Municipality have been left homeless following severe flooding caused by the overflow of the Dayi River. While the floodwaters have begun to recede, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reports that the disaster has impacted 4,218 households, with Hohoe Zongo, Bla, and Galikorpe identified as some of the hardest-hit areas. Although public infrastructure remained largely intact, the local economy suffered significant setbacks, including the loss of approximately 500 poultry birds and the destruction of numerous agricultural fields. Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has been active on the ground, highlighting that many of the displaced individuals are currently seeking refuge with friends and family. Emergency response teams and a dedicated Relief Distribution Committee are currently coordinating the evacuation of residents and the distribution of essential items such as mattresses and food supplies. However, Mr. Tsekpo has cautioned that the assistance provided thus far is insufficient to meet the scale of the crisis, calling for more robust support from both the government and private stakeholders. In a show of high-level support, President John Dramani Mahama visited the affected communities to assess the extent of the damage and offer condolences to the victims. Following the President's assessment, Ibrahim Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners, pledged a substantial donation of 5,000 bags of cement through his company, Dzata Cement. This contribution is intended to facilitate the reconstruction of the hundreds of homes damaged by the floods, providing a critical boost to the recovery efforts led by NADMO and local authorities. As the municipality enters the recovery phase, health authorities have been deployed to prevent potential disease outbreaks in the aftermath of the receding waters. Residents have been strongly advised against returning to buildings that may be structurally unsafe due to water damage. While NADMO continues to provide tents and additional food items, the focus is now shifting toward long-term stabilization and ensuring that the thousands of displaced residents can safely return to their homes and livelihoods.
