NPP Condemns Arrest of Communications Director Aspirant Dennis Miracles Aboagye by EOCO

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed outrage following the reported arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a prominent member of its communications team and a former aide to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. According to a statement by NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, Aboagye was apprehended by officials from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), with assistance from the Ghana Immigration Service, at the Accra International Airport. The arrest reportedly occurred upon his arrival from the United Kingdom on July 12, 2026.

The NPP has characterized the detention as an act of politically motivated intimidation, noting that Aboagye’s lawyers and family have allegedly been denied access to him. General Secretary Kodua emphasized that no formal charges have been filed against the party member and that his current whereabouts remain unverified by the party leadership. The NPP is demanding his immediate release or a formal presentation before a competent court, warning against the misuse of state institutions to target opposition figures and vocal critics of the government.

While the official reasons for the detention remain unconfirmed by EOCO, reports suggest the investigation may be linked to alleged corruption offenses during Aboagye’s previous tenure as the Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCC). However, the NPP maintains that the timing is suspicious, coinciding with Aboagye’s recent announcement to contest for the position of National Communications Director within the party. Having served as the spokesperson for the Bawumia campaign during the 2024 general elections and as the Municipal Chief Executive for Akuapem North, Aboagye is a central figure in the party's efforts to reorganize following its recent electoral defeat.

In his candidacy declaration, shared via social media just hours before the reports of his arrest, Aboagye pledged to strengthen the NPP’s communication structures and effectively convey the party’s vision as they prepare for the 2028 election cycle. The party has urged its supporters to remain calm and law-abiding while leadership pursues legal avenues to secure Aboagye’s release.
