The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has expressed strong confidence in the operational consistency of the Sentuo Oil Refinery, projecting steady production through December 2026. NPA Chief Executive, Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, highlighted that the refinery’s performance is expected to significantly boost Ghana’s fuel supply stability. This outlook comes at a critical time as the country navigates international market pressures, offering a degree of reassurance to consumers and businesses alike regarding the availability of petroleum products for the remainder of the year.
Reinforcing this optimistic projection, the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) noted the strategic value of domestic refining in mitigating supply insecurities. According to CBOD Chief Executive, Dr. Patrick Kwaku Ofori, the combined output of the Sentuo Oil Refinery and the state-owned Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has the potential to satisfy approximately 25-30% of Ghana’s national fuel consumption. While imports will still be required to cover the majority of the country's needs, the increased contribution from local refineries provides a vital buffer against global supply chain disruptions.
However, both the NPA and CBOD have tempered expectations regarding fuel pricing. Dr. Ofori cautioned that domestic refining does not automatically translate to lower prices at the pump, as local refineries must still purchase crude oil at prevailing international market rates. The primary benefit of the Sentuo facility’s consistent output is supply reliability rather than price reduction. To further protect consumers, the CBOD is advocating for enhanced operational efficiency and increased capacity within the domestic refining sector to reduce the overhead costs associated with fuel production.
Looking ahead, energy experts and industry leaders are calling for a more robust, long-term energy strategy that extends beyond short-term electoral cycles. Dr. Ofori emphasized the need for sustained investment in local refining infrastructure and suggested that improvements in public transport could offer additional long-term protection for consumers against volatile fuel prices. By fostering a dependable domestic source of fuel alongside strategic imports, Ghana aims to build a more resilient energy sector capable of weathering international price fluctuations and global supply constraints.
