Bawku Senior High School plants 480 Acacia trees for afforestation

Bawku Senior High School has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability by planting 480 Acacia trees as part of the Green Ghana Project. Led by the school’s headmaster, Reverend Abugbilla Bukari, students and staff participated in the exercise to support national afforestation efforts and combat the effects of climate change in the Upper East Region. The initiative has already seen a high survival rate among the recently planted saplings, which are intended to provide shade and create new recreational spaces for the school community. This recent exercise continues a legacy of environmental stewardship that began at the institution in 1991 under the leadership of the late headmaster B.J.L. Kumasi. Reverend Bukari, who was a student at the school when the first major afforestation efforts were launched, expressed a personal commitment to the cause. He noted that the trees planted decades ago have transformed the campus into a green oasis, and the current project aims to ensure that future generations of students benefit from a conducive and sustainable learning environment. Beyond the environmental benefits, the headmaster emphasized that the tree-planting initiative is a pedagogical tool designed to foster a sense of responsibility and sustainability among students. By involving the youth directly in the care of the environment, the school aims to cultivate a culture of conservation. However, Reverend Bukari also highlighted significant challenges to the project’s success, specifically the threat posed by roaming livestock. He advocated for the construction of a perimeter wall around the school campus to shield the young trees from destruction and ensure the long-term viability of the forestation efforts. The project at Bawku Senior High School aligns with the broader objectives of the Green Ghana Project, a national initiative aimed at restoring the country’s lost forest cover. As the trees mature, they are expected to improve local climatic conditions and provide a blueprint for other educational institutions in the region to follow. The school administration remains focused on monitoring the growth of the 480 Acacia trees while seeking support for better protective infrastructure to safeguard the burgeoning green space.
