The National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) has successfully dismantled a sophisticated network of counterfeit currency syndicates operating within the Greater Accra Region, resulting in the arrest of 16 individuals. The intelligence-led operations, which took place between June 12 and July 24, 2026, targeted organized criminal groups involved in the large-scale production and distribution of fake banknotes. This crackdown was designed to prevent significant economic disruption and protect the integrity of Ghana's financial system from the influx of fraudulent tender.
During the raids, security officials uncovered four distinct printing hubs where the syndicates carried out their illegal activities. Investigators revealed that the criminals employed highly deceptive tactics to mask their operations, including the use of religious premises and churches to hide heavy printing equipment. In addition to the arrests, the NSCS seized several specialized printing machines, unregistered vehicles used for distribution, and over $543,000 in counterfeit currency. The sophisticated nature of the seized equipment indicates a well-structured organization capable of producing high-quality forgeries intended for both local and international markets.
The 16 suspects apprehended during the operation include a mix of Ghanaian and foreign nationals, highlighting the transnational dimension of the syndicate's activities. Following months of intensive surveillance and intelligence gathering, the suspects have been remanded into custody and are currently facing prosecution at the Accra High Court. The National Security Council emphasized that these arrests are part of a broader, ongoing strategy to weed out organized crime and ensure that those attempting to undermine the nation's economy face the full rigour of the law.
As investigations continue to identify additional accomplices and distribution points, the NSCS has issued a strong advisory to the public, financial institutions, and property owners. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or unusual currency features to law enforcement agencies immediately. The Secretariat specifically cautioned landlords and religious leaders to be mindful of the activities taking place within their facilities, as criminal elements often exploit such spaces to avoid detection. This operation marks a significant victory for national security in the ongoing effort to maintain financial stability and public order.
