On January 14, 2023, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) executed a successful nighttime operation to disrupt illegal mining activities along the Ankobrah River in Ayiem Juabo, Western Region. This initiative was prompted by intelligence reports indicating severe pollution caused by galamsey operations in the area. During the operation, seven suspects were arrested, including two minors aged 15 and 16. NAIMOS seized various pieces of mining equipment and dismantled makeshift structures used for illegal mining. The detained individuals were subsequently handed over to local police for further investigation. In a bid to enhance enforcement and protect Ghana's water bodies and forest reserves, NAIMOS announced plans to deploy field officers permanently to high-risk areas. This operation underscores NAIMOS's commitment to combating illegal mining and safeguarding the environment from its detrimental impacts.
