The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) has intensified its efforts to safeguard public security through a dual-track strategy focusing on grassroots education and technical weapons management. Recently, the Commission successfully reached over 3,650 students, teachers, and parents in the Bono, Upper West, and Ashanti regions as part of an extensive anti-gun violence campaign. Simultaneously, NACSA concluded a specialized training program for armoury storekeepers and managers to enhance the physical security of the nation’s stockpiles, reflecting a comprehensive approach to mitigating the threat of illicit firearms in Ghana.
The school outreach program is designed to foster a culture of peace among the youth, encouraging them to reject violence and the allure of illegal small arms. During engagements in various educational institutions, NACSA officials emphasized the dangers associated with illicit weapons and the importance of community vigilance. By involving parents and educators, the initiative seeks to create a sustainable support system that protects young people from the risks of gun-related crimes and promotes a safer learning environment across the targeted regions.
Complementing this public-facing campaign is the Commission's focus on professionalizing the management of state and institutional armouries. The recently completed Armoury Storekeepers and Store Managers course provided participants with advanced skills in Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM). This training, which received technical support from The HALO Trust, focused on aligning Ghana’s storage practices with international standards. By improving the oversight of weapons and ammunition, NACSA aims to prevent the diversion of arms into the wrong hands and reduce the inherent risks of poor storage.
These initiatives underscore the Commission’s broader mandate to maintain peace and security within the country. As Ghana continues to strengthen its security infrastructure under the current administration of President John Mahama, the integration of public education and rigorous technical standards remains vital. By addressing both the social drivers of violence through education and the supply-side risks through better management, NACSA is playing a critical role in ensuring that Ghana remains a beacon of stability in the West African sub-region.
