Naa Di-Naa Donlabong III, the Paramount Chief of Jirapa, has called for a shift in the development paradigm, asserting that progress "must not always begin from Accra." Speaking at the official launch of the Anwelle Foundation in the Upper West Region, the traditional leader urged residents and Jirapa natives in the diaspora to take personal responsibility for their community's growth. The foundation is established as a non-partisan initiative aimed at tackling the dual challenges of poverty and youth unemployment through targeted educational and vocational interventions.
The foundation’s CEO, Frank Anwelle, highlighted that the organization seeks to bridge significant resource gaps that often leave talented individuals in rural areas without opportunities. To date, the foundation has already demonstrated its commitment by providing relief to students affected by a recent dormitory fire and initiating youth-centered vocational training. A centerpiece of their strategy is the establishment of an automotive apprenticeship program, designed to equip local youth with practical skills that translate directly into employment and economic independence.
During the ceremony, Naa Di-Naa Donlabong III emphasized the need to move away from a "culture of entitlement" and heavy reliance on government support. He argued that local initiatives are often better positioned to understand and solve unique community challenges. This sentiment was echoed by international participants and local leaders, who stressed the importance of measurable impact and transparent operations to ensure the foundation's sustainability. Local leaders further pledged financial support to help the fledgling organization achieve its goals without being overwhelmed by initial costs.
In a notable address during the event, the Paramount Chief also defended the decision to award a chieftaincy title to a social media influencer, framing it as a strategic move to promote Jirapa’s potential. He noted that modern tools and digital platforms should be embraced to showcase local opportunities to the world. As the Anwelle Foundation begins its operations, the focus remains on fostering a spirit of collective responsibility, where grassroots efforts and diaspora contributions work in tandem to transform the socio-economic landscape of the Jirapa traditional area.
