Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), officially announced his candidacy for another term on October 21, 2026. Speaking after picking up his nomination forms, Gbande stated that his decision to run is rooted in a desire to provide the administrative experience necessary to prepare the party for the 2028 general elections. He underscored his record of loyalty and long-standing service to the NDC under the leadership of President John Mahama.
Addressing party members and the media at the NDC headquarters, Gbande offered a public apology to anyone he may have offended during his current tenure. He acknowledged that his firm approach to fulfilling his responsibilities has occasionally led to friction, but he maintained that his actions were always in the best interest of the party. He emphasized that his experience in the national secretariat is a vital asset that will enable him to serve more effectively if the delegates grant him a second term.
During the announcement, Gbande also responded to recent criticisms regarding his political conduct and personal integrity. He specifically challenged the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Miracle Aboagye to scrutinize his record, asserting that he has no history of corruption. While admitting to a reputation for being a political "troublemaker," Gbande insisted that such a label should not be confused with a lack of trustworthiness. He contrasted his own standing with allegations of financial misconduct directed at political opponents following the NPP’s recent electoral defeat.
Gbande’s re-election bid comes as the NDC begins the process of selecting its leadership for the next four years. He argued that a stable and experienced national executive team is crucial for the party to consolidate its current governance and successfully contest the next general election cycle. His campaign will now focus on engaging with delegates across the country to secure their support ahead of the party's internal voting.
