The Upper East Regional Police Command has confirmed the death of 20-year-old Muntari Munumi, an armed robbery suspect who passed away after falling unconscious while in police custody. Munumi, who had been re-arrested following a violent incident at Sapeliga Junction, collapsed as officers were transporting him to a location intended to help identify and apprehend his accomplices. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The incident began when Munumi allegedly targeted two victims at Sapeliga Junction. During the robbery, the victims displayed remarkable bravery by managing to disarm the suspect, who was armed with an assault rifle and ammunition. Local community watch members were quickly alerted and assisted in his initial capture before he was handed over to the police for formal processing and investigation.
Following his arrest, Munumi reportedly provided investigators with specific details regarding his accomplices involved in the robbery. It was during the subsequent operation to track these individuals that the suspect suddenly lost consciousness while being transported in a police vehicle. Officers immediately rushed him to the hospital for emergency medical attention, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
The suspect’s body has since been deposited at a morgue pending an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. While the investigation into the initial robbery continues, the Upper East Regional Police Command has praised the local community for their vigilance and support in disarming the suspect. Police authorities have assured the public that efforts remain underway to track down and arrest the remaining members of the robbery gang.
