The Ministry of the Interior has achieved a significant milestone in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda, successfully migrating 18 essential public services to online platforms. This initiative, announced by Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, aims to streamline government operations and enhance accessibility for citizens and international visitors alike. Central to this success is the performance of the newly launched e-Visa system, which has recorded nearly 1,500 applications from 78 different countries within just one month of its implementation.
The e-Visa platform, which was officially inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama on May 25, represents a major shift in how the Ghana Immigration Service handles international travel authorizations. During a high-level briefing with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Minister Muntaka highlighted the global reach of the system, noting that the diverse range of applicant nationalities underscores Ghana's growing appeal as a destination and the efficiency of the new digital interface. This transition is expected to significantly reduce wait times and remove the geographical barriers previously associated with manual visa processing at diplomatic missions.
Beyond immigration, the ministry’s digitalization drive encompasses a wide array of administrative functions designed to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and eliminate excessive paperwork. Among the 18 newly online services are registrations for private security firms and child-related documentation. Furthermore, the ministry has integrated the application process for cannabis cultivation licenses into its digital portal, reflecting a modern approach to regulated industry oversight. Minister Muntaka emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to integrate services across various state agencies, ensuring a more cohesive and user-friendly experience for the public.
This digital overhaul marks a pivotal step in Ghana’s efforts to modernize its public sector and foster a more transparent governance framework. By transitioning from manual to electronic systems, the Ministry of the Interior is not only improving service delivery but also enhancing the security and integrity of government data. As the government continues to expand online access, these technological advancements are expected to set a precedent for other ministries, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and digitally-resilient national economy.
