IGP Yohuno and DVLA Set November Launch for TraffiTech-GH to Curb Rising Road Carnage

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has issued an urgent call for increased road safety and caution as Ghana prepares for the full implementation of the TraffiTech-GH automated traffic enforcement system on November 1, 2026. Highlighting the devastating impact of road accidents on communities, the IGP emphasized that the new technology is a critical step toward protecting pedestrians and motorists alike. The system, which was recently bolstered by a donation of 1,000 reflective vests from the Street Sense Organisation, aims to modernize traffic management and reduce the daily burden on the 3,000 police officers currently deployed to manage manual traffic flow across the country. Under the TraffiTech-GH system, high-tech cameras will be deployed to monitor vehicle speeds and identify traffic violations automatically. To ensure operational efficiency, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Ghana Police Service have confirmed that recognized emergency and security vehicles will be exempt from automated speeding tickets during the performance of their authorized duties. However, officials warned that private vehicles not registered as emergency responders will still be ticketed. Vehicle owners are strongly advised to update their ownership records immediately to avoid being held liable for offenses committed by new owners of vehicles they have sold. The nationwide rollout follows a successful preparatory phase that included targeting specific areas for safety improvements. In the Volta Region, the DVLA has been working to establish a model road safety zone, citing improved compliance among motorists and a significant 47% increase in financial performance related to licensing and registration. Regional Director Rowland Coffie Dorkenoo noted that while vehicle registrations and driving license applications are rising, challenges such as truck overloading on steep slopes remain a priority for enforcement. The authority plans to combine educational campaigns with the TraffiTech-GH technology to enhance overall compliance. As the November 1 launch date approaches, the Ghana Police Service is intensifying public education efforts to ensure all road users understand the new regulations. While the automated system represents a significant shift toward technology-driven enforcement, the IGP clarified that manual traffic management by police officers will continue to operate alongside the new digital infrastructure. This multi-layered approach is designed to create a safer environment on Ghana's roads and drastically reduce the number of preventable fatalities caused by speeding and reckless driving.
