Mortuary Workers Association Demands Professional Respect and Condemns Sensationalist Media Content

Journalists in Oti Region urged to uphold ethical standards in SRHR reporting

Journalists and media practitioners in Dambai, the capital of the Oti Region, have been called upon to prioritize professional ethics, accuracy, and confidentiality when reporting on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The call was made during a specialized workshop aimed at equipping media personnel with the necessary skills to handle sensitive health information and promote public health through accurate reportage. Facilitators at the event emphasized that responsible journalism is a critical tool in ensuring that individuals can access health services without fear of judgment or social repercussions. The workshop highlighted that reporting on SRHR requires a high level of fairness and a commitment to protecting the rights of affected individuals, particularly those from vulnerable groups. Facilitators warned that irresponsible reporting practices often lead to increased social stigma and can significantly damage public trust in health services. Participants were encouraged to move beyond sensationalism and instead focus on providing evidence-based information that challenges common myths and misinformation surrounding reproductive health in the region. Technical sessions during the workshop also touched upon the necessity of maintaining strict confidentiality, especially when dealing with cases involving minors or sensitive medical histories. By adhering to these ethical guidelines, media professionals are expected to serve as a bridge between health providers and the public, facilitating better understanding and more informed decision-making. The facilitators stressed that the media's role extends beyond merely informing the public; it includes a responsibility to protect the dignity of the subjects they cover. The training concluded with a strong recommendation for participants to adopt more responsible reporting practices that enhance public discourse on SRHR matters. As the media landscape continues to evolve, the expectation is that journalists in the Oti Region will lead the charge in fostering an environment where reproductive health issues are discussed with the sensitivity they deserve. This initiative is expected to lead to more accurate coverage that empowers citizens to make informed choices about their own health and well-being.
