Brighton & Hove Albion winger Yankuba Minteh has generated significant conversation across the footballing world after unveiling his selection for the top five African players in Premier League history. The list, shared during an interview with BBC News Africa, has particularly resonated in Ghana due to the inclusion of two prominent Black Stars: the legendary Michael Essien and current West Ham United playmaker Mohammed Kudus. While the acknowledgement of Ghanaian talent has been widely welcomed by local supporters, Minteh's choices have also drawn scrutiny for the high-profile stars left off his personal roster.
The inclusion of Mohammed Kudus is perhaps the most striking element of Minteh's selection, given that the West Ham midfielder is still in the relatively early stages of his Premier League career compared to established icons. However, Kudus’s explosive impact since joining the Hammers from Ajax has clearly impressed his peers and regional contemporaries. Alongside him, Michael Essien’s presence on the list underscores the enduring legacy of the "Bison," whose dominant years at Chelsea earned him a reputation as one of the most formidable and successful midfielders to ever grace the English top flight.
However, the primary source of contention among fans and pundits remains Minteh’s decision to omit Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. As the highest-scoring African player in Premier League history and a multiple-time Golden Boot winner, Salah is almost universally regarded as a mandatory inclusion in such rankings. By choosing Kudus and others over the Egyptian captain, Minteh has challenged the conventional hierarchy of African footballing greats in England, prompting a wave of social media discussion regarding the criteria used for defining greatness in the league.
As Minteh continues his own journey in the Premier League with Brighton, his provocative list serves as a reminder of the subjective nature of footballing legacy. Whether his choices reflect a generational shift in perspective or a simple preference for specific styles of play, the debate highlights the rich history and growing influence of African talent in the world’s most-watched football league. With players like Kudus and Minteh himself representing the new era of talent, the pool of contenders for future "top five" rankings is only set to expand.
