Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Ghana Medical Trust Fund Advance Specialized Care Reforms Through Manhyia Visit and KGL Partnership

The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) have intensified efforts to expand access to specialized healthcare and diagnostic services across Ghana. Led by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the initiative combines high-level traditional advocacy with strategic private-sector partnerships. Central to this drive is a recent briefing provided to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on health sector reforms and a multi-million cedi collaboration with the KGL Group to establish a state-of-the-art diagnostic facility at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital.

During a visit to the Manhyia Palace, Minister Akandoh and the GMTF leadership briefed the Asantehene on progress made in addressing the financial barriers associated with chronic non-communicable diseases. The delegation emphasized that the Trust Fund is a cornerstone of the government's strategy to ensure that specialized treatment is accessible to all Ghanaians, regardless of their economic status. By engaging with the Asantehene, the Ministry aims to leverage the influence of traditional leadership to raise public awareness and encourage citizens to utilize the support structures provided by the Fund. The Asantehene’s endorsement is viewed as a critical step in the national rollout of these health reforms, reinforcing the importance of community trust in the healthcare system.

In a parallel development, the GMTF has finalized a landmark partnership with the KGL Group and the KGL Foundation to modernize diagnostic capabilities in the capital. The project involves the construction of an ultra-modern diagnostic center at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, which will house advanced medical imaging technologies, including MRI machines, CT scanners, mammography units, and fluoroscopy equipment. GMTF Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku and KGL Group CEO Alex Apau Dadey recently conducted a site inspection to signal the commencement of the implementation phase. This private-sector investment is a direct response to the GMTF’s call for corporate support to bridge the diagnostic equipment gap in public hospitals.

These developments represent a significant shift toward a more sustainable healthcare model under the mantra "Heal Ghana. Save Lives." By focusing on both physical infrastructure and financial risk protection, the GMTF seeks to drastically reduce patient waiting times and the dependency on expensive private referrals. As the Ridge Hospital project moves toward completion, it is expected to serve as a primary hub for advanced imaging in the region, setting a blueprint for future public-private partnerships. The Ministry of Health maintains that these combined efforts are essential for achieving equitable healthcare access and ensuring that no Ghanaian is denied life-saving treatment due to financial hardship.
