Mfantsipim School Commences Preparations for Landmark 150th Anniversary as Alumni Reflect on 'Kwabotwe' Legacy

Mfantsipim School, Ghana’s first secondary institution, has officially begun preparations for its historic 150th anniversary, scheduled to culminate in a grand celebration in 2026. The Mfantsipim 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, led by Kenneth Shelton Aikins, recently paid a courtesy call on Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, the Paramount Chief of the Oguaa Traditional Area, to brief him on the upcoming sesquicentennial festivities. Established on April 3, 1876, the school—affectionately known as 'Kwabotwe'—remains a cornerstone of Ghanaian education, and the upcoming anniversary marks a century and a half of academic excellence and leadership development.

During the meeting at the Emintsimadze Palace, the committee outlined an ambitious roadmap for the celebrations, which will reach their peak with a grand durbar on November 14, 2026. A highlight of the planned events is the “Aseda Durbar,” a special thanksgiving gathering that will bring together other historic secondary schools within the Cape Coast enclave to celebrate their collective heritage. Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II expressed his full commitment to supporting the school’s milestone, while Headmaster Ebenezer Aidoo acknowledged the traditional council's ongoing patronage and the school's deep-rooted connection to the Oguaa community.

In tandem with these official preparations, the school's alumni are reflecting on the enduring impact of the “mfantsipism” ethos. Members of the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA) class of 2016 recently shared insights into their formative years at the school, emphasizing how the institution's motto, ‘Dwen Hwɛ Kan’ (Think and Look Ahead), shaped their character. The 2016 cohort, which entered the school over a decade ago, noted that the rigorous discipline, morning assemblies, and the physical challenge of navigating the school's famous hills instilled values of honesty, grit, and humility that continue to guide them in their professional lives.
