Manhyia South MP Calls for Greater Focus on Judicial Independence in Constitution Review

Nana Agyei Baffour-Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, has voiced strong criticism of the Constitution Review Committee for its apparent lack of emphasis on the judicial system in its recent discussions. During an appearance on JoyNews, he highlighted concerns that the committee's focus on extending presidential tenure could undermine the independence of the judiciary. Baffour-Awuah emphasized that the judiciary must operate independently from the executive branch to preserve democratic principles. He cautioned that prioritizing presidential term limits over judicial independence risks making the judiciary subordinate to the executive. The MP also called for necessary legal reforms to address governance challenges without extending the presidential term from four to five years, as suggested by the committee's recommendations.
