Ahmed Ibrahim announces 1.8 million unit housing deficit in Ghana

The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Ahmed Ibrahim, has disclosed that Ghana currently faces a housing deficit of 1.8 million units. Speaking at a workshop in Accra, the Minister characterized this significant shortage as both a developmental challenge and a strategic opportunity to reform the country's construction sector. He emphasized that addressing this gap is critical to the government's agenda, but noted that the method of delivery must align with modern environmental standards to ensure long-term sustainability. Mr. Ibrahim urged stakeholders in the construction industry to prioritize the use of low-carbon building materials to address the housing need while mitigating climate change. He explained that the choices made today regarding building materials will have a lasting impact on Ghana's carbon emissions for the next century. By adopting sustainable practices now, the Minister argued that the nation can meet its urgent housing demands without exacerbating the environmental effects of traditional, carbon-intensive construction methods. The workshop, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, brought together global entities including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). During the proceedings, Linda Agbesi of UNOPS Ghana launched a new project specifically focused on the promotion of sustainable construction materials. This initiative aims to establish a framework for the responsible sourcing of building supplies, demonstrating that green construction is both economically viable and scalable for large-scale housing projects. Experts at the workshop underscored the urgency of transitioning to a low-carbon construction model as Ghana seeks to bridge its housing gap. They noted that aligning national housing strategies with global sustainability efforts is essential for resilient urban development. As the government continues to tackle the 1.8 million unit deficit, the focus will increasingly shift toward creating a regulatory and economic environment that supports eco-friendly building technologies to ensure future housing is both affordable and environmentally responsible.
